LED Guitar Capo

industrial design, prototyping, electronic design, 3D renders

Music is about good times and light. We designed custom electronics and a working guitar capo that clipped onto a guitar neck for those extra vaaaabs!

Services

Industrial Design

The design needed to be functional, like a regular capo and it had to work its magic with the light shining up and down the neck. So my focus was majority functional. I explored different lens and reflector designs for the LEDs to make the lighting effect flow naturally up and down the neck.

Prototyping

I built working prototypes to test the electronics, lighting effects, and overall fit on a guitar. These prototypes helped us dial in things like LED brightness, placement, and how the whole thing fitted together.

Designed for Manufacture

The LED enclosure was designed for injection molding, and the capo for CNC aluminium. I made sure the components could be assembled easily and securely, including USB charging access while the capo was on the guitar.

Electronics / PCB Design

We had to design a custom PCB that powered the RGB LEDs and fit neatly inside the compact enclosure. Brightness versus battery life was the crux of the electronics as we had very little space. But we squeezed everything into a rather compact design. We also made sure you could charge while playing for those longer gigs.

3D Renders

I created a few in situation 3D renders showing how the capo would look when lit up on the guitar. The visuals helped get feedback and show off the concept before going too far into production.
